VIRTUAL CONFERENCE

When organizing virtual conference, COL has to search for the lowest common denominator that would allow all participants to be able to take part.  A Web-based interface would see the conference severely limited in its active participation, due to the fact that bandwidth and the cost of full internet access for those not as fortunate to have telephone and IP cost covered.  Using a new interface rather than their own tried and true mail client would limit the comfort factor not to mention the problems of having to go to a site to participate.  Free software caller Hypermail collects the mail each night from posts and sorts into threads, date and author.  The use free software demonstrated what could be done by those persons who did not have the budget for a client-based system such as First Class, a commercial computer conferencing software or a web-based interface (if they have the infrastructure to support it) like WebBoard. This system demonstrates what could be done with limited resources like those with a limited infrastructure and lack of funds for a server solution for a network. For example, all the virtual conferences that COL undertook for the Pan-Commonwealth Forum operated on a 486/66 computer that was running Linux as an operating system with Hypermail asthe massage archive system. All software components are available without cost and license.
