Commonwealth Day 2008

"The Environment - Our Future"
is the theme of Commonwealth Day 2008
to be observed on Monday, 10 March 2008

Commonwealth Day is celebrated on the second Monday in March every year. The aim of commemorating Commonwealth Day is to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation and the work of the Commonwealth to improve the lives of its 1.8 billion citizens. "The Environment - Our Future" is the theme for Commonwealth Day to be held on Monday 10 March 2008.

Within the Commonwealth community, there are 53 member countries, some 2 billion people, and a great diversity of cultures, voices and opinions. We are of different nationalities, ethnicity, faiths and political beliefs. But we share common values such as democracy, just and honest government, and advancing the cause of peace and prosperity.

While respecting our differences, the Commonwealth works to promote international understanding, equality and mutual respect in our multicultural world.

Further information about this year's Commonwealth Day theme can be found on the Commonwealth Secretariat web siteStudent and teacher resources for Commonwealth Day, Commonwealth sport and Commonwealth studies are available on the Commonwealth Secretariat's Young Commonwealth web site.

Commonwealth Day and Commonwealth Day activity are also celebrated through the special Commonwealth Day web site (www.commonwealthday.com) offered by the Joint Commonwealth Societies' Council (JCSC) and the Royal Commonwealth Society.

In Metro Vancouver, Canada, the Mainland B.C. Branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society is sponsoring a Commonwealth Day celebration/multifaith observance to be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, 09 March 2008, at Rocky Point Park, 2800 Murray St. (at Moody St.), Port Moody, BC.
