Proposed VUSSC Logo

Included in the VUSSC strategic plan is a requirement that we create a logo. Please take a look at the following options and give us your comments. If you have more ideas, please circulate via the discussion list or email them to haskounis who will upload them to this page for everyone to see and comment on.

Logos and Descriptions Comments

Prior robust logo discussion surrounding this idea and the one below can be found in the WikiEducator forum  .

VU with the V and dot representing a person with open arms embracing the world perhaps the U with an electronic mouse feature (for clicks) and the Two S (horizontally for the Sea and maybe mountains to represent the Small states)

Also as had been mentioned by Alex ( represent the flowing of information and openess of the oceans for access and connectivity. The biggest feature being the inverted C for the Creative commons (copyleft) notations which surround the whole VUSSC open content creations.

What's missing is the linkages (or holding hands as in the three proposed) and the colours of the states.

focused on the people

Colours: the 5 official commonwealth colours. Blue for the crest symbolises water, connectivity and technology as well as innovation and optimism and to reference the many island state members. Purple crest: linkage to COL, has authority, has visual weight and the colours of the global hands are move balanced.
Concept: interlocking hands to symbolise cooperation, the collaboration of the many partner states, and strength in numbers.
Circle: globe, etc. font: I stylised the "SS" slightly to lend focus to the Small States as the important aspect of this initiative. Also the touching of the letters creates "connectivity" and "flow". Option C was another exploration of this. Option B is traditional and straight forward.

At VCILT, we all like the colours and the idea of a circle.
Though, the design looks somehow ambiguous, between shaking hands and snakes biting their tails.

Can we try a proposal, respecting the idea but refining the design.

perhaps knots instead of hands: a strong african symbol.

ring looks like a chain: The Chain is a symbol diametrically opposite to the spirit of Freedom that VUSSC needs to stand for.

the Badge/Shield design is passée.

I really like the idea conveyed by the "circle" in the logo proposal and the utlisation of Commonwealth Colours.

[B] appears to provide a good image as well as concept of collaboration.
One may ask further, cllaboration for what and answer is for knowledge.
Is it possible to put a symbol of knowledge oin the middle of the circle and see how it looks.

[B is] easy on the eyes

prefer B design [over A & C] with font from #C

I like the colours of [B], but prefer the font on [C].

I like the combination of colours in [B]

These look good. I think I favour [B] 'coz stands out more with stronger colour surround.

I like [B] but it doesn't appear to be quite sufficient in itself. The essence of VUSSC is cooperation and collaboration and the ring, which looks like a chain, denotes that essence.  It would be useful to add a design which symbolizes joint learning or at least learning, to complete the picture.  I don't know how one depicts small states graphically but that, too, would be relevant although not absolutely necessary.

I prefer the purple colour scheme [B] which in my opinion is more outstanding.

 General Comments:

  • remove name "vussc"
  • add a motto like "inter pares" among equals
  • Were using cutting edge socio-tech-dynamics, I'd like something a bit more snazzy that says "this is new stuff", but not ultra modern that spells de-constructive-relativism i.e. "this logo means what you want it to mean". I would also like to see something that hints at the ICT/Web/Virtual component of our project.
  • I have given much thought on how one might represent small-states symbolically, and have always turned up with a blank.... Unfortunately all the tiny animals I can think of which have immense strength (and therefore good candidates for such a symbol) have negative connotations (e.g. the flea :-p ).
  • maybe it might be worthwhile to try putting the globe in the middle of the circular links for the purple logo background that Philip first came up with and see how it looks.
  • When you mentioned the five colours of the CW, I thought of writing VUSSC with those five colours (one for each letter) in a style. I am drawing little inspiration from the OU on the logo of the Open University of UK. Do we also need to maintain the presence of COL's logo in a subtle manner?
  • While interpretations may vary there may be somethings that you want to communicate in the logo such as the concept of being a "virtual" community of sorts.
  • what about the Commonwealth ribbons (5 coloured ribbons) in a circle.
