AFRICAN EDUCATIONAL RESPONSES TO THE CHALLENGES OF GLOBALISATION
Abstract
At present, Africa is seriously handicapped by low primary, secondary, and tertiary education enrolments and with high illiteracy rates in the adult population. In the next decade Africa faces the challenge of ensuring that her population, particularly the younger generation, possesses the educational, professional, and technical skills to compete globally. At the same time, the growing democratisation of Africa requires a higher level of civic education and responsibility. Closer regional collaboration also requires that African countries harmonise their education and training systems.
Open learning systems offer technical and lower-cost possibilities to African countries to provide access and to improve the quality of education to young people. This paper briefly presents the challenges and a vision of the part open learning systems can play in providing viable solutions for Africa.

Problems accessing or printing PDF files? Please review the following:
Ensure that you have at least version 2.0 of Acrobat Reader loaded on your computer
In some cases, you may see a blank screen after downloading the PDF file. If this is the case, you may need to "clear" your "cache" (Netscape) or "delete" your "temporary Internet files" (MS-Internet Explorer) and then refresh your download.
Another possible solution to downloading and printing problems is to "save" the PDF file to your hard-drive and then open it from there (instead of opening it directly from the Internet).
