CTO and COL conduct virtual workshop for tourism educators and curriculum specialists

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS -- The Caribbean Tourism Organization/Caribbean Tourism Human Resource Council (CTO/CTHRC), working in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), is organizing a 40-hour virtual workshop entitled "Atutor Course Development and Delivery," which takes place during October and November 2004.

At the end of the workshop twenty five (25) curriculum specialists and tourism educators from tertiary level institutions across the Caribbean will have gained valuable practical experience in actually developing an online course using  using Atutor and will also have developed an awareness of how to transfer the skills learned from this course to other Learning Management Systems and e-learning initiatives.

  • Barbados - Barbados Community College

This workshop is a follow up to a five-day workshop conducted in Barbados in May 2004 entitled "Instructional Design Processes for On-Line Learning" which focused on developing the skills of participants to create multimedia courseware.  The workshop was funded by CIDA's Caribbean Regional HRD Project for Economic Competitiveness (CPEC), under the Caribbean Tourism Learning System project, which was aimed at facilitating a strategic and coordinated approach to tourism and training in the region.

The Caribbean Tourism Organization/Caribbean Tourism Human Resource Council intends to utilize the skills of the workshop participants to assist in the development of an online course in Sustainable Tourism in 2005, and will continue to work with its tertiary education partners to develop additional online courses.  This collaboration between the Caribbean Tourism Organization and the Commonwealth of Learning is expected to reap benefits for Caribbean students in the long term by providing greater access to tourism/hospitality courses throughout the region, through online delivery mechanisms.
