STUDENT COMPETITION

Invitation to all post-secondary open learning students, regardless of specific area of study. Please see enclosed entry form. 

The Marketing sub-committee of the Second Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning, scheduled to take place at the International Convention Centre in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa from 29 July 2002 to 2 August 2002, extends an invitation to bona fide distance learning students to submit entries for a competition. This conference promises to be attended by some of the world’s leaders in the filed of Open and Distance Learning, and would provide one winner and a partner, with an opportunity to share in this wonderful occasion. 

Details of competition 

Competitors are invited to submit a paper/essay of approximately 1000 words in English, on the following topic: 

“Translating theory into practice: How open and distance learning will assist my village (or) province (or) country to become a developed area.” 

The paper must be typed in double spacing on one side of the paper. The full names and contact details of the participating student must be included in the submission. Two print copies and (if possible) an electronic diskette copy in MS Word or Wordperfect must be submitted to:

Prize 

The successful participant will receive transport, accommodation and full registration to the conference free of charge, and will be given the opportunity of reading the winning essay at the conference. To commemorate the award the winner will also receive a book prize. 

Conditions 

    The competitor must be a bona fide formally registered student with an educational provider, and must provide   proof of paid registration. 

    The competition will be conducted free of bias regarding home language, race, gender, political or religious affiliation, sexual orientation or any other form of discrimination. 

    To synchronise with the purpose of the competition ie to draw student's attention to the conference, one entry per person will be limited to people who have not exceeded the age of 25 years by 31 December 2002. 

    The adjudicating panel’s decision will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the award of the winning entry. 

    The winner must provide proof of identity, an affidavit confirming that it is the original work of the winner, and may not cede her/his prize to any other person.

    The prize cannot be converted to cash.
