School Tours - Talking to Teachers working for development. South Africa is a country of great contrasts and nowhere is this more evident that in education. KwaZulu-Natal has some of the poorest rural communities and the most under-resourced and poorly developed schools. Currently the government is tackling issues such as the large number of under-qualified teachers in the province by means of a mixed mode approach but according to Cynthia Mpati, Provincial Director of the District Development Support Programme, there is more to improving the quality of schooling than upgrading the qualifications of the teachers.

This School based tour will provide participants with an opportunity to meet with teachers who are making a difference both to their pupils and in the wider community and to see some of the difficulties faced in the rural areas and strategies being adopted to overcome them. On the way back into Durban there will be a short lunch stop at a cultural village with craft and souvenir sellers.
