The historical perspective of open schooling in India is provided in the full report but it is worth noting that the National Open School set up in 1989 morphed into the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in 2002. NIOS soon became a remarkable example of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) at the school level benefiting generations of children by giving them self-esteem through the education path. Almost all the State Open Schools in India depend on NIOS for several inputs and therefore, the full Report dwells at length on many striking features of NIOS.
