Senior Adviser: Women and Girls
Mrs Frances Ferreira joined COL as Education Specialist, Basic Education and Open Schooling, on 22 January 2007. Starting 15 January 2016, Mrs Ferreira became Senior Adviser: Women and Girls.
Prior to joining COL, from 1996 to 2006, Mrs Ferreira, who is a teacher by profession, was Director of the state-owned Namibian College of Open Learning. As the institution's first chief executive, she facilitated the strategic positioning of NAMCOL, both nationally and internationally.
Previously, Mrs Ferreira served the Namibian community as a teacher and school principal. She also became the first female Mayor of Grootfontein in 1994 and, in 1995, was elected as Vice-President of the Association of Local Authorities in Namibia.
She has also served as Chair of the Namibian Open Learning Network Trust and Chair of the Distance Education Association of Southern Africa (DEASA).
Mrs Ferreira's contribution to the field of open and distance learning in Namibia was rewarded in 2002 at COL's second Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning, held in Durban, South Africa, when she received the Distance Learning Experience Award from the Commonwealth of Learning (one of COL's Excellence in Distance Education Awards).
