The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) recently supported a three-day workshop at Erdiston Teachers’ Training College (ETTC) focused on self-directed learning (SDL) and the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in teacher education. The workshop was organised in response to the broader national education transformation agenda in Barbados, aligning with efforts to modernise teaching practices and prepare educators to effectively integrate emerging technologies into teaching and learning.
Designed as a train-the-trainer activity, the workshop engaged 22 academic staff at the college in exploring strategies to build learner autonomy and integrate AI tools into pre-service and in-service teacher preparation. Sessions covered SDL theory and frameworks, hands-on experience with AI technologies, and discussions on the ethical use of AI in education.
In his opening remarks, the Deputy Principal of ETTC, Mr Francis Thompson, expressed appreciation for COL’s support and observed, “Self-directed learning is essential to the professional growth of educators, and the integration of AI is helping us reimagine how we train and support teachers. This workshop is timely for our institution as we continue to align with the national agenda on education transformation.”
Guided by expert facilitators, participants explored a range of AI tools while applying them to lesson design, educational research, and learner engagement. They also examined ethical considerations related to AI, including data privacy and responsible use.
The workshop concluded with a commitment from participants to embed the approaches learned into their programmes, particularly by applying newly acquired skills toward the finalisation of the courses currently under development.
COL’s Education Specialist for Teacher Education, Dr Betty Ogange, explained, “Equipping educators with the knowledge and tools to navigate both pedagogy and emerging technologies is key to building resilient, future-ready education systems. The skills and insights gained from the workshop will hopefully go a long way in enriching teacher development efforts in the country.”
Besides ongoing capacity building at ETTC, COL will continue to engage with the Ministry of Training and Tertiary Education to support national policies and quality assurance processes for innovative CPD and contribute meaningfully to Barbados’ broader teacher education reforms.
