Fifty-five educators and officials in Ghana recently explored the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in education at the country’s first national workshop on AI in teacher education. The workshop, supported by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) under its Teacher-in-the-Loop (TiL) project, empowered participants to leverage generative AI (GenAI) for resource development and collaboration to improve learning outcomes.
Co-hosted by the Ministry of Education, the Centre for National Distance Learning and Open Schooling (CENDLOS), and Wesley College of Education, the two-day event brought together national education officials, teacher educators, teachers, and other stakeholders.
In his opening address, the Executive Director of CENDLOS, Mr Nana Gyamfi Adwabour, underscored the transformative potential of AI in modernising teacher training and advancing educational equity. Professor Adom Asamoah, STEM Education Advisor at the Ministry of Education, reinforced this position, emphasising that AI can bridge resource gaps and support Ghana’s educational goals.
The workshop sessions introduced participants to key concepts and practical applications of AI and GenAI in education. Participants explored various ways to create inclusive, culturally relevant and gender-sensitive open educational resources (OER) to address diverse learner needs.
They also received hands-on training on generic GenAI tools for content generation, multilingual resource adaptation, and the development of visual aids. Using COL’s AI-powered OER platform, participants collaborated in co-creating and peer-reviewing sample OER tailored to the national curriculum for colleges of education.
COL has developed this AI-powered platform to help teachers both adapt and create OER to meet curriculum standards. By harnessing generative AI and collaborative review tools, educators can produce customised lesson plans, quizzes and lesson content, all while ensuring quality through peer oversight. The platform’s integration of openly licensed assets further supports inclusive, accessible learning for diverse classroom needs.
COL’s Education Specialist: Teacher Education, Dr Betty Ogange, provided an overview of the TiL project in a virtual presentation. She explained, “This project is a catalyst for innovation in teacher education, enabling educators to collaborate, share expertise, and co-create resources that align with the diverse needs of their learners.”
Teacher-in-the-Loop AI is a multi-disciplinary project of COL covering both the education and skills sectors and is implemented in five countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
