The Gambia advances gender equality in higher education

Recently, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (MoHERST), The Gambia, supported by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), hosted the final component of the gender scorecard implementation to develop a Gender Action Plan (GAP). This roadmap aims to promote gender equality across tertiary and higher education institutions under the Ministry’s purview, ensuring equitable opportunities and significantly impacting gender equality in the education sector.

The event was officiated by Deputy Permanent Secretary Administration and Finance, Mr Demba Bah and COL’s Focal Point, Anthony G. Mendy, Director of Tertiary and Higher Education, MoHERST who underscored the Ministry’s commitment to gender inclusivity.

By participating in the GAP development, the Ministry is not only promoting inclusive dialogue but also integrating gender equality principles into its educational institutions. This team-based approach will aim to enhance the overall quality of education.

The development of this high-level GAP by MoHERST marks a pivotal step towards achieving gender equality in the higher education sector of The Gambia. The representation from educational institutions across the country, coupled with media coverage, reflects the national importance and political and collective commitment to this cause.

Ms Mig Alphonso, COL’s Gender Adviser participated in and contributed to the event, highlighting the COL-Ministry collaborative initiative to promote gender equality in education. She thanked the Honourable Minister Professor Pierre Gomez for his unwavering commitment to advancing gender equality in higher education nationwide.
