In collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), the Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ) has introduced an innovative teacher professional development programme using open and distance learning (ODL) methods. The ODL programme, offered in April 2023, showcased the council’s commitment to incorporating modern teaching methodologies and technology into in-service teacher training sessions.

TCZ Registrar, Dr Eddy Mubanga emphasised the Council’s exceptional dedication to advancing teaching practices. “We are quite anxious,  eager and ready institutionally to learn, and once we learn, we are also ready to share,” Dr Mubanga commented.

TCZ has emerged as an exemplar in promoting professional development and revitalising the teaching profession, in turn, creating a ripple effect that extends beyond national boundaries and impacts education systems in the region.

Mrs Josephine Shamputa, the Deputy Registrar, said that by empowering TCZ officials with modern teaching techniques and strategies, COL has not only enhanced the professional skills of the officials but also positively influenced the teaching methods and overall educational experience of teachers throughout the country.

Dr Evode Mukama, COL Adviser: Teacher Education, referred to the transformative impact that  ODL can have on Zambia’s education system, “The efforts of TCZ, with support from COL, are expected to yield positive outcomes in terms of improved teaching practices, increased student engagement, and enhanced learning outcomes.”
