With young people representing more than 60 per cent of the Commonwealth’s population, this issue of Connections looks at the opportunities and barriers they face as technology, labour markets and climate pressures reshape education and work.

Through stories on youth innovation ahead of CHOGM 2026, the disengagement of boys and young men from education, pathways for women in science and technology, and livelihood-focused skills development, we explore how expanding opportunities can equip the next generation with the knowledge and confidence to shape their futures and contribute to more resilient communities.

These themes come to life through the experiences and perspectives of our partners. In Sri Lanka, the Women’s Development Centre shares a mother’s journey into agricultural entrepreneurship and her growing role as a mentor to other women in her community. We also speak with Professor Chakrapani Ghanta, Vice-Chancellor of Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University, about the potential of digital transformation and AI to improve the quality and accessibility of open and distance learning. Women leaders from Malaysia also make the case for breaking down barriers and creating stronger career and leadership opportunities for women in STEM across Asia.

We also examine how greater synergy across the Commonwealth can inform COL’s next strategic plan, including insights from the Roundtable on Open Learning convened in London with Commonwealth sister institutions to advance collaboration on the future of learning.

The issue offers practical guidance on evidence-based business models, online learning, learner assessment and trusted digital credentials to support more accessible learning. Together, these stories and resources show why equity and innovation must advance hand in hand.
